Many companies have an ongoing and expanding requirement to preserve information that has been placed on legal hold. In an effort to meet their legal obligations, some companies develop in-house solutions based on home-grown keyword lists, or rely upon out-of-the-box software. While these approaches find some of the responsive information, they usually also return a vast quantity of non-responsive information which then requires further detailed manual review.

Alternatively, some companies choose to preserve everything  and only assess the information when it needs to be produced. This course typically results in exorbitant storage, maintenance and review costs that could have otherwise been avoided. It also increases risk of noncompliance, as well as costly disruptions in business operations.
